W.S. KALS was a planetarium director and the author of Practical Navigation and The Stargazer’s Bible, among other books.

CLYDE SOLES has written four books for The Mountaineers and regularly contributes articles on outdoor equipment, nutrition, and fitness to publications such as Backpacker, Outside, Hooked on the Outdoors, and the online outdoor and fitness resource GearTrends. He also founded Trail Runner magazine and has been a senior editor at the climbing magazine Rock & Ice.
